Day 6: Florence

Friday morning we caught a fast train from Rome into the heart of Tuscany...an hour and a half later we were in Florence...and it was HOT! Our new game would be find the shade!
We followed our Lonely Planet guide to an underground sandwich place...nice and cool! It was the first time the shop owners didn't speak Italian...but we managed to point and laugh our way through an awkward conversation.

Then it was off to see the Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge that survived the war...it was used to link the Medici Palace and the Uffizi Gallery (their private art collection).
The top layer is their private walkway, the bottom part is a walkway for normal folk and is lined with jewelry shops.
Today we wouldn't see Michaelangelo's David but took a quick snap of a fake one...
After walking through the Uffizi we headed to the Galileo museum....
It was a nice change from all the art work and sculpture...
Here he is...they also have his actual preserved finger in the museum! Gross!
Thanks for inventing these Galileo, primary school teaching of measurement wouldn't be the same without them!
The Duomo in Florence is very beautiful....look at the colourful walls..That night we followed lonely planet again to what we thought would be a fairly normal reasonably priced restaurant. When we got there we found a long line up, and with no booking hoped we would get in.
Once inside they sat us at a table with six other people, four from America and two from WA Australia... The waiter came over and pretty much said "today for Apetizer you will be eating.." we just nodded and out came heaps of delicous food for us to eat!
For Primo we were given a choice of pastas, and for Secondo we were given a choice of meat dishes (the first time we had a real steak in Italy!)

This was all lovely except with all this delicious food we hadn't once looked at a menu and had no idea what the meal was costing us! Luckily the New Yorkers we where sitting with had done their research and had more of an idea than us! They explained that the owner came round at the very end of the meal and wrote a cheque, the same cheque amount for everyone in the restaurant that night. Which was great for the drinkers cause we paid the same as them and they got all the free house wine! Anyway it was a great experience, and the food was AMAZING! I would really recommend it and despite our worries it worked out to 90Euro for the both of us so $110 for an amazing four course meal for two! AND the New Yorkers we were sitting with recognised Tony Burton sitting at the table behind us! We were really in one of the best and top rated restaurants in Florence! ...and we had no idea!
Great first day/night in Tuscany!

Day 5: Our last day in Roma...

Finally it was Thursday...and we had come to our last day in Rome! After being brave the day before and trying the underground out at night we were extra brave on the last day and took a bus! Hayden hates buses at the best of times, let alone a crowded Rome bus where there is no visible way to pay or validate your ticket (very stressful for Hayden!). Luckily it all worked out fine and we landed somewhere in the central stroricco near this...
an amazing old building! Believe it or not!
The Pantheon was one of the things Hayden had been looking forward to seeing...and he wasn't disappointed!

In Australia you often see a sign advertising chips and a coke...or a pie and a coke... well when in Rome...
Oh how we would miss these cobbled streets... (but not really cause they are a BIG pain to walk on!)
...The Piazza Navona... Roman achitecture is based around public meeting places... Piazzas, they are pretty cool...(But not really, they are actually really HOT, cause whoever invented them hadn't heard of trees, or grass, or stuff that keeps you cool!...so when it's hot and sunny you pretty much die walking through a Piazza, and goodluck finding somewhere to sit in the shade!)

Umm...I'm pretty sure this is Socrates...but we saw the heads of so many famous people, I could be wrong...
 This is Venus...
This is Hayden contemplating a GIANT torso.... hahaha...

Just so much to look at!

...and so much delicious Gelato to eat!
...and when they say it comes in EVERY flavour...they aren't lying!
 Some romantic bridges....

...and a big walk to the Galleria Borghese...well worth it! If we'd known it was surrounded by massive gardens that you can ride tandem bikes around on we would have gone earlier! But this was by far the best art collection we saw in Rome...and probably in Italy!
....also you walk a long way underground from the train station to get there on these really steep escalators...unfortunately the picture doesn't really show how steep it is!
Our last night wouldn't be complete without a final trip up to our favourite gelato place (the one two doors down from our hotel)
ahh how I will miss you delicious gelato!
Rome was my favourite place in Italy! It just felt so Italian! I loved all the things to look at!
The next day we would pack up and head north to the heart of Tuscany; Florence, Hayden's favourite place on the trip:)

Day 4: Vatican City

Within Rome is another city...yes a sovereign state with its own postal service and currency, Vatican City. We booked ahead online and avoided the huge lines into the museum...we also chose to go Wednesday morning which is when the Pope addresses his flock in St Peter's Square...good move, cause while everyone is there looking at the Pope, we are making our way through a relatively quiet museum.

It's very big, and the map isn't very helpful, so we spent a lot of time doing this...
...and listening to our audio guide!
It would seem that through the ages the Pope's have remained popular with the people and with many wealthy leaders...
...thus they get a lot of presents! All these presents are kept in the Vatican Museums for the general public to view. Now if you remember your history lesson from the last post you would have noticed that Egypt was once part of the Roman Empire...hence this little mummy...
 This is someone important...
 ...a room of tapestry...
 Dripping in gold...
 ...a room of maps...
 ...Such detail! Everywhere you look!
Ruffael was another Ninja Turtle, and famous artist with whom we became acquainted with in Rome...
 ...he did this...

Thank goodness for seats around the museum ... my feet had only just begun to shrink back to normal size, and regular rests were a must! (Notice the essential water too!)
A little taste of Da Vinci... (Not a very nice one).
After the Raffael rooms we entered the Sistine Chapel and got to marvel at Michaelangelo's work. (Another ninja turtle). It was amazing, but i'm not sure what all the fuss was about...we couldn't take pictures in there, but it didn't feel like a chapel to me!
This was one of my favourite paintings in the museum...
These are the famous steps that lead out of the museum...
Designed by Da Vinci it looks like they only go one way... infact the concentric circles have opposing paths...
By the time we left the museum we noticed our camera battery was quite low... (Always check before you leave in the morning!) We still had St Peter's square and Basilica to go! Luckily we needn't have worried as we got through the rest of the day without the camera failing us!
St Peter's Basilica is HUGE! Like MASSIVE! Under that brown four poster thing are St Peter's bones as declared by a Pope a few generations back...

Being its own state means it has its own police/guards...check out what they get to wear!...
After all that we headed back to Trident in Rome for a spot of shopping and to grab some pics on the Spanish Steps...

In Australia if you see a 'smart' car, it's rare, and laughable... well everyone drives tiny cars in Rome...and you can see why...
That night on the 'Lonely Planet's' recommendation we headed to the oldest pizzeria in Rome...this place was older than Australia!!
The pizza was great! But not so much for an American tourist who asked the waiter "Do you have anything with pineapple on it?"
oh dear.
